This fizzing moon crater STEM activity is an out-of-this-world way to explore space science! Easy, hands-on fun with baking soda and vinegar.

Materials

  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • Yellow food coloring
  • Small bowl
  • Plate or tray
  • Vinegar
  • Droppers or pipettes

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix baking soda with a small amount of water until it forms a thick, moldable paste.
  2. Add a few drops of yellow food coloring and stir until the color is evenly mixed.
  3. Scoop the paste onto a plate or tray and shape it into a large circle or a half-moon.
  4. Press your fingers or the back of a measuring spoon into the surface to create several moon craters.
  5. Fill droppers with vinegar and invite children to squeeze a few drops into each crater.
  6. Watch as the vinegar reacts with the baking soda, creating a fizzy, bubbling eruption inside each crater. Continue adding vinegar to explore the different craters.
