Materials

  • Have You Seen My Acorn? by DK Ryland
  • Large sensory bin or shallow plastic tray
  • Kinetic sand or play sand
  • Fall leaves (real or artificial)
  • Acorns (real or artificial)
  • Pinecones
  • Tongs or child-safe tweezers

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bin. Fill a shallow sensory bin with kinetic sand or play sand. Spread it evenly across the bottom.
  2. Add the autumn leaves. Arrange red, orange, and yellow leaves on top of the sand to create a fall scene.
  3. Hide the acorns. Scatter acorns throughout the sand, partially burying a few so children can search for them.
  4. Add pinecones. Place pinecones around the bin to bring in natural woodland textures and encourage children to explore different shapes and surfaces.
  5. Include the tools. Add wooden tongs or child-safe tweezers so children can pick up acorns, move leaves, and transfer their woodland treasures.
  6. Read the story. Read Have You Seen My Acorn? together, then invite children to help search for the missing acorn in their sensory bin.
  7. Explore and play. Encourage children to dig, scoop, sort, count, and hide the acorns. Challenge them to find every acorn or sort their discoveries by size and color.
