Turn a fall leaf hunt into a science investigation! After reading We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt, head outside with your child to collect a variety of leaves and use a magnifying glass to take a closer look at their colors, shapes, textures, and tiny details.

Materials

  • A variety of fresh or fallen leaves
  • Magnifying glass

Instructions

  1. Read the Book: Read We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger to introduce the activity and get children thinking about the different leaves they might find.
  2. Go on a Leaf Hunt: Take your child outside and collect several leaves in different colors, shapes, and sizes.
  3. Sort the Leaves: Place the leaves together and encourage your child to sort them by color, size, shape, or another characteristic they notice.
  4. Investigate: Use a magnifying glass to examine each leaf closely. Look for veins, spots, tiny holes, jagged edges, textures, and other details.
  5. Compare: Talk about how the leaves are alike and different. Which leaf is the biggest? Which has the most noticeable veins? Which feels smooth or rough?
