Create an adorable squirrel inspired by The Leaf Thief by Alice Hemming! After reading the story, children can make a paper bag squirrel holding onto a colorful fall leaf.

Materials

  • Brown paper lunch bag
  • Brown construction paper
  • Fall-colored construction paper for the leaf
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Pencil
  • Black marker

Instructions

  1. Cut the Squirrel Pieces: Cut out two ears, two arms, and a large tail from brown construction paper.
  2. Make the Leaf: Trace a leaf onto construction paper and cut it out. Draw leaf veins with a marker.
  3. Add Squirrel Details: Draw a face on the front of the paper bag. Add details to the ears and draw curved lines on the tail to create a furry texture.
  4. Glue the Ears: Glue the ears to the top of the paper bag.
  5. Glue the Tail: Attach the large tail to the back or side of the paper bag.
  6. Add the Leaf: Glue the leaf to the front of the paper bag.
  7. Add the Arms: Glue the arms over the leaf so it looks like the squirrel is holding onto the leaf.
